Course / Planning a twilight fix

Part IV · The fix · Page 2 of 6

When is twilight by my watch?

The almanac's daily pages give sunrise, sunset and the twilights for latitudes from 72° N to 60° S, in local mean time (LMT). The times are worked for the Greenwich meridian, but they change so little from one meridian to the next that they serve as the local time of the event at any longitude. Three steps turn it into your watch time:

  1. LMT at your latitude: interpolate between the rows either side.
  2. UT = LMT + your longitude in time if west, − if east (15° = 1 h, 1° = 4 min).
  3. Zone time = UT − zone description.

March 10, 2027, DR N 38°, W 070°, zone description +5. Civil twilight ends (evening).

Table: N 35° 1828, N 40° 1828. For 38°, three-fifths of the way: LMT 1828.

W 070° = 4h40m. UT = 1828 + 4h40m = 2308. Zone time = 2308 − 5h = 1808.
